Phlox hirsuta (Polemoniaceae) is an endangered perennial species endemic to serpentine soils. Its distribution is limited to five populations near Yreka in northern California. Although individuals can produce hundreds of flowers, approximately 80% of flowers fail to develop into a fruit. Results from previous experiments suggest that a combination of factors—including pollen inviability, self-pollen interference, and florivory—limit fruit set in this self-sterile species. However, we do not yet know if fecundity limits its population growth. A long-term demography project is presently underway to determine the degree to which each life history stage is hindering (or promoting) population growth. In each of three populations, we tagged 219 to 221 plants (ranging in age from first year seedlings to relatively large adults) and will monitor their survival, growth, and reproduction over time. In addition, we are monitoring 213 plants inside a deer-exclusion fence to determine the extent to which deer are affecting individual fitness and population growth. We are also assessing the biodiversity and abundance of neighboring plants to investigate whether interactions with nearby plants are facilitative or competitive. Along with field research, the population genetics of the species is being explored with the use of microsatellite loci. Microsatellites developed for species of Phlox are being examined for their utility in P. hirsuta, and at least six loci can be readily amplified in the species. Combined, our research will 1) identify the life-history stage(s) that are limiting or promoting population growth, 2) reveal whether deer or neighboring plants are contributing to this species’ risk of extinction, and 3) elucidate population structure and demographic history.
