Systematics McDonnell, Angela Jean [1], Fishbein, Mark [1]. Phylogeny and evolution of the enigmatic flat milkweeds of Matelea subgenus Chthamalia (Asclepiadoideae, Gonolobinae). Matelea is one of the largest genera of the milkweed subtribe Gonolobinae. However, it is also recognized as a lineage that is paraphyletic to much of the rest of the subtribe. One candidate for segregation from Matelea, subgenus Chthamalia (the “Ch” is silent, ~30 spp.) is comprised mostly of prostrate perennial herbs distributed from the southern parts of the United States and throughout northern and central parts of Mexico. In this study, we sample multiple individuals of species of Chthamalia and apply a genome skimming and targeted enrichment approach to reconstruct a species-level phylogenetic hypothesis of the clade. Character reconstructions of growth form and floral morphology, placement of Chthamalia within Gonolobinae, and taxonomy are also discussed. Log in to add this item to your schedule
