Systematics Harris, Jesse [1], Shaw, Joey [2]. Phylogenetic study of Castanea ozarkensis Ashe (Fagaceae) to determine the geographic distribution of genetic variability. Castanea Mill. (Fagaceae) consists of three species in North America: Castanea dentata, Castanea pumila, and Castanea ozarkensis. Previous molecular studies have shown intraspecific variability within the three species, (Shaw et al, 2012, Castanea), (Li & Dane, 2013, Tree Genetics & Genomes). The species with the greatest genetic variability was C. dentata, while the species with the least was C. ozarkensis. In C. ozarkensis, Shaw et al. observed only one haplotype. However, this species was not the primary focus of that investigation and therefore it was under sampled compared to the other species. Since the ten accessions collected for the previous study only represented a small portion of the species’ range, we are currently uncertain whether this entity lacks the genetic variability of the other two taxa or is merely the result of a deficient sample size. Through the addition of five hypervariable plastid markers (atpI-atpH, trnS-trnG, psbA-trnH, rpl16, rpl32-trnL, Shaw et al. 2014), and increasing the sample size to 50+ accessions, we look to gain increased resolution in the geographic distribution of genetic variability within C. ozarkensis.
