Examination of the molecular genetic basis of andromonoecy in Aneilema (Commelinaceae).

Many species of the plant genus Aneilema (Commelinaceae) exhibit an andromonoecious breeding system: a single plant will produce both hermaphroditic and staminate flowers. The type of flower that will develop at a given time follows a predictable sequence in the first inflorescences produced by a plant, with flowers formed during the first 7-9 days being hermaphroditic and those formed later being staminate. As a result, Aneilema provides an opportunity to examine the molecular mechanisms underlying the production of each floral type. To identify candidate genes that may be involved in determination of floral type, we generated de novo transcriptome sequences from young floral buds of Aneilema schlechteri plants grown from seed, including day-two (hermaphroditic) and day-fifteen (staminate) buds, as well as a floral bud from Tradescantia ohiensis, a member of Commelinaceae that produces only hermaphroditic flowers. A de novo reference assembly consisting of the three types of floral buds resulted in 196,428 transcripts. Differential expression analyses were conducted to determine candidate genes for determination of floral type. Efforts are currently underway to annotate and categorize each transcriptome and the differentially expressed genes. This study provides a foundation upon which the molecular genetics of floral diversification in Aneilema and Commelinaceae as a whole will be examined.
