Establishing a Plant Species Checklist for Fish Lake Field Station (Lapeer, MI).

Eastern Michigan University owns a field station in Lapeer, MI called Fish Lake. For more than 50 years, Fish Lake has provided students and faculty with a wide variety of habitats to explore biodiversity, learn field skills, conduct long-term research and collaborate across disciplines.  The property consists of 240 acres and its location in the tension zone makes for a unique and diverse flora comprising the northern and southern limits of many species.  A total of 383 plant species (in 222 genera and 91 families) has been recorded at Fish Lake. These values suggest that 53.2% of plant species and 73.4% of families in Lapeer County are present at Fish Lake and that 13.4% of species and 52.3% of families in the state are represented. Forty-five species at our field station have a Coefficient of Conservation score of six or higher (six species have a score of 10) and five are listed as threatened or endangered. Vouchered specimens of 331 species are at EMC. Vouchers for the remaining 52 species were collected in 2016.  A comprehensive and vouchered plant species checklist was created and published on Symbiota. Each specimen is imaged and georeferenced. Field stations are increasingly vulnerable as financial resources are limited and the Fish Lake Property is, unfortunately, no exception.
