Castilleja’s (Orobanchaceae) notoriety of having poor species boundaries makes it an ideal genus to examine delimitation processes. Castilleja pilosa, ranging from Idaho and Oregon to California and Nevada, has three varieties: C. var. steenensis, C. var. pilosa, and C. var. longispica. Castilleja pilosa var. longispica in southern Idaho and its small disjunct population in northern Idaho offer an opportunity to examine whether the geographical separation between the two populations has resulted in separately evolving populations, as evidenced by notable morphological changes. Taxonomically important features, including predominantly floral characteristics, were measured for C. pilosa and its close relatives, and PCA and DFA were used to evaluate morphological variation across the C. pilosa complex. Whether the morphological differences are great enough to distinguish the northern disjunct population of C. pilosa var. longispica from its southern population as a separately evolving group or not, a clearer understanding of the taxonomic standing of C. pilosa var. longispica has resulted.
